Johannesburg Water and Johannesburg Roads Agency are working closely to ensure the M1 bridge is completed urgently.

Houghton residents and motorists who use Central Street and Glenhove Road are urged to be patient while Johannesburg Water repairs the leak on the M1 bridge.

The burst, which is causing water to flow onto the M1 and poses a hazard to drivers, requires a complex repair due to its location beneath the highway bridge. Because of its deteriorated condition and the restricted space around the concrete bearing structure, specialised contractors were brought in to carry out the work.

The Gazette on September 10 reported that Johannesburg Water (JW) confirmed that the critical repair was completed and the Johannesburg Roads Agency would commence with the reinstatements.

However, this was incorrect because when the JRA team went to inspect the site on September 10, they were met with a leaking pipe and a road that was not backfilled as Johannesburg Water had promised.

The Johannesburg Water spokesperson, Nombuso Shabalala, explained that last week, the Johannesburg Water contractor found another minor leak where they were working at the site of the original leak.
“This was a separate leak from the original one. Water was isolated, and the leak has since been repaired.”

JRA head of regional operations, Khaya Gqibitole, noted that Johannesburg Water was still on-site, dealing with the original leak.

“Once completed, JRA will be on-site to undertake the required reinstatement. The entities are working closely to ensure the work along this critical route is completed as a matter of urgency so that normal traffic can resume.”
