JW finally addresses the water crisis issues stemming from structural problems within the Commando System and Hursthill reservoirs, the plan for significant upgrades, how it will impact the community, and what to expect for the coming months.
Ward 87 councillor Kyle Jacobs has engaged senior management at Johannesburg Water (JW) to discuss ongoing issues with water supply stemming from structural problems within the Commando System and Hursthill reservoirs.
These infrastructure challenges have persisted for several years, leading to significant disruptions in water availability for local residents.
“As many residents are aware, JW has consistently faced difficulties in balancing water supply across various systems. The current operational challenges highlight the complexities involved in managing the water supply network effectively,” said Jacobs.
In response to these persistent challenges, JW has announced plans for a comprehensive reservoir rehabilitation and infrastructure upgrade for the Commando System, he added.
Construction is scheduled to commence in early May, contingent upon final preparations proceeding as planned. The project aims to address the structural deficiencies and is expected to take approximately 13 months from start to finish.
He highlighted that despite the upcoming infrastructure improvements, JW has cautioned that water supply issues are likely to continue in the short to medium term until the rehabilitation project is completed.
JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala has provided crucial updates regarding the ongoing issues with the HH2 reservoir, revealing significant challenges that impact water supply for local residents.
She stated that the HH2 reservoir, currently limited by a critical crack, can only be filled to 25% of its capacity, translating to a maximum of 12 hours of water supply instead of the required 48 hours.
“This limitation has raised concerns about the reliability of water availability for the 5 710 stands, serving over 25 000 residents in the area.”
A professional service provider has been appointed to address the crack, with the project currently in the documentation and procurement stage.
“The anticipated commencement for repairs is set for March, with completion expected 13 months after the contractor’s appointment. The inflow rate into the HH2 reservoir is measured at 170l per second, which falls short of the needed 236l per second to meet demand.”
Shabalala further added that the upcoming Crosby Bulk Infrastructure Project, currently out for tender, is designed to augment this inflow and alleviate pressure on the existing system.
“While the new Brixton reservoir and tower, under construction, will not directly resolve issues at the Hursthill area, it represents a significant step in enhancing the overall water supply system. The construction, nearing 80% completion, is scheduled for completion by April this year, and is expected to improve water supply, create jobs, and empower small and medium enterprises (SMMEs).”
She outlined that the total investment for this project is approximately R300m, funded through JW capital expenditure projects, meaning no additional costs will be borne by residents.
“JW is committing around R3b over the next three to four years for comprehensive upgrades to the Commando System, which includes enhancements to the Crosby pump station, pipeline expansions, and operational overhauls. These initiatives aim to future-proof the infrastructure and ensure reliable water access for communities that depend on uninterrupted supply.”
The project managers overseeing these repairs are Millicent Maluleke and Seemole Tleane.
In a commitment to transparency and community involvement, JW has agreed to hold monthly feedback meetings with residents to discuss progress and updates on the various projects.
Whilst JW works to stabilise and improve its water supply infrastructure, residents are urged to remain patient during this challenging period. The utility is focused on accountability and timely communication as it navigates these significant upgrades.
