JRA has confirmed that they have begun investigations into the sinkholes discovered on Denise Circle and nearby streets in Blairgowrie.

Residents around Denise Circle in Blairgowrie were left shaken after two deep sinkholes suddenly appeared near a popular community park.

One sinkhole opened directly in the middle of the road, posing a serious risk to motorists and cyclists using the residential street, while the second, equally dangerous, formed on the pavement just metres away, along a stretch frequently used by families, joggers, and dog walkers.

Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) head of regional operations Khaya Gqibitole said they are aware of the sinkholes around Denise Circle. He continued, saying their regional teams had inspected the area, identifying more sinkholes, one near the kerb inlet and storm water drain along End Street and Neeron Road. “The other sinkhole appeared to be a junction box with the cover stolen. Initial assessments indicated that there is damaged structure beneath the road’s surface. The other is on Judy Road.”

Gqibitole confirmed that further investigations are planned to take place within the month of April, which will involve excavations of the affected road sections. “This will assist in assessing the depth of the sinkholes, any damage to critical underground infrastructure, and determine the cause of the sinkholes. Thereafter, the remedial scope will be planned and designed. Once extensive investigations are concluded, the repair timelines will be communicated by JRA.” In the meantime, the four sites have been barricaded for the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

Gqibitole added that the root cause of the sinkhole will be determined once the excavation commences. “The road reserve generally contains various services, including electricity infrastructure, fibre infrastructure, storm water, water and sewer reticulation systems, and various other services.”

Blairgowrie Community Association chairperson Harold Fleishman and Ward 104 councillor Bea Campbell-Cloete urges residents to exercise extreme caution to prevent what could become a tragic accident. Fleishman feels the issue should be treated as an emergency. “Unfortunately, JRA are so inundated. There are potholes all over the place. I suppose it comes down to a matter of urgency.

“This one in the park might not seem so urgent, but if somebody falls in it, then it’s going to be very urgent and serious. The other one is actually on the road. Cars can drive over the road and could also end up in a big sinkhole.”

Campbell-Cloete confirmed that she will continue escalating the issue with JRA.
