Confirming that they are aware of the unfinished reinstatements, Johannesburg Road Agency said they will attend to the holes as soon as possible.
Johannesburg Road Agency’s Region B depot is aware of the reinstatements on Bend Street in Blairgowrie that are still standing open months after they attended and patched a few of them.
The holes were the result of Johannesburg Water leak repairs. Although JRA carried out some of the work reinstating the roads in October, the entity did not patch all the holes, promising to come back and complete the work.
JRA’s head of department for regional operations Khaya Gqibitole explained that the entity undertook patch work and repairs on the day. Two of the three patches were completed and the third patch, showing signs of still being moist, or not completely dry, was not completed. “The work will be completed as soon as possible, as is it is still under our work in progress. The repair schedule was interrupted by inclement weather and wet conditions, which are not conducive or desirable for asphalt.”
JRA wishes to assure the residents that the defect is not neglected or ignored, and appeals for patience while they resolve the matter.

The holes left continue to pose safety concerns for residents, as they fill with water and create mud when it rains. Motorists are forced to drive in oncoming lanes to avoid them.
Blairgowrie Community Association chairperson Harold Fleishman explained that it’s been months since the roads were left in this condition. “It’s hard to drive here. When it rains, it becomes muddy and hard to see, as the area is not barricaded or taped off.”
He added that Ward 102 councillor Lucinda Harman escalated the issue, and they promised to return by the end of the week, but they haven’t shown up. “It is unacceptable that we have to beg them to do their jobs.”
The holes include one at the corner of Bend Street and Mackay Avenue, another at the corner of Gordon and Mackay avenues, as well as one up on Barkston Drive, all remnants of Johannesburg Water pipe leak repairs. They all remain untouched, and it remains unclear when they will be attended to.
