JDA reports steady progress on the upgrades at the Midrand Pikitup depot, which will strengthen waste services and support local employment.
Progress is underway on the upgrade at the Pikitup Midrand depot in Rabie Ridge.
Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has confirmed that construction work is advancing steadily.
The upgrade promises a modernised facility aimed at improving waste management services across Midrand. The project includes structural improvements, a new guardhouse, upgraded water and sewer systems, and a reinforced boundary wall.
Beyond operational benefits, five local labourers have been employed on site, highlighting the project’s focus on skills transfer and community development.
In a social media update shared on March 7, the agency confirmed that construction work at the depot is advancing steadily, with several key components of the project already underway. According to the JDA, site works and structural improvements are progressing as planned, with the upgrade expected to modernise the facility and strengthen its operational capacity.

The project forms part of efforts to enhance service delivery by Pikitup Johannesburg, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity.
The redevelopment of the Midrand depot forms part of a broader collaboration between the JDA and Pikitup that was announced last year. The partnership focuses on upgrading waste management infrastructure across the city to promote sustainable waste practices and help reduce illegal dumping.
JDA spokesperson Kenneth Nxumalo previously stated that, once completed, the upgraded depot is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening refuse collection services and supporting cleaner neighbourhoods in Midrand and surrounding areas.4
