Johannesburg Road Agency is awaiting for procurement to fix the damaged Milner Avenue bridge, which is causing traffic congestion on the road due to a damaged culvert.

A damaged culvert on the corner of John Adamson Drive and Milner Avenue has caused traffic congestion in the area, with motorists facing delays when traveling from Northcliff Corner towards Albertville and Newlands.

Ward 88 councillor Nicolene Jonker stated that the initial damage was due to a pipe burst on March 6, however, due to excavation, it took out parts of the road. “I have been trying to get a hold of Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) because it was handed over to them after the repairs were done by Johannesburg Water (JW).”

Jonker added that she requested a barricade be placed, until JRA had done a full assessment of the road.

According to JRA head of regional operations Khaya Gqibitole: “The assessment revealed that, while there is some damage to the culvert, the integrity of the structure remains sound, and we are satisfied that there are no major structural concerns with the bridge.”

JRA has taken steps to ensure the area is safe for motorists. “Barricades have been placed around the damaged road while we await the procurement process, between JRA and JW, to be concluded, for repairs to the culvert, and then reinstatement of road layers,” Gqibitole said.

JRA has confirmed that there is no major bridge rehabilitation work required, and the focus is on repairing the damaged culvert and reinstating the road layers.
