The sound of splashing water and cheering families will soon replace construction noise as Ivory Park’s pool project nears completion.
For years, residents of Ivory Park have dreamed of a place to swim, play, and gather. That dream is finally within reach as the new Ivory Park swimming pool complex nears completion, set to transform community life.
The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) confirmed that key infrastructure work, including water and electricity connections, has now been completed.
Final touches are underway, such as connecting the bulk sewer for ablution facilities, testing pumps, balancing the pool’s water quality, and conducting final cleaning and quality checks ahead of the official handover.
Once operational, the facility will serve residents of Ivory Park, Kaalfontein, and neighbouring communities as a modern recreational hub. It boasts an Olympic-style swimming pool, a splash pool for children, grandstand seating, and an impressive range of eco-friendly features, including solar water heating, rain water harvesting, grey-water recycling, and waterless toilets.
JDA CEO Themba Mathibe acknowledged that the project had faced challenges and delays in recent years, but said the agency had worked hard to fast-track its delivery.
“Following our appointment as the new management, we prioritised addressing the challenges, including the resolution of all outstanding town planning matters.
This has enabled us to ensure that the pool is opened, in line with our commitment to the residents of Ivory Park, who have long been impacted by the absence of water and electricity connections.”
Mathibe emphasised that the project is not only about building a swimming pool; it’s about creating inclusive spaces that improve community life.
“It’s about uplifting neighbourhoods, fostering healthier lifestyles, and contributing to a more sustainable Johannesburg.”
The Ivory Park swimming pool complex will join more than 50 public pools across the city’s seven regions.
It forms part of a broader municipal strategy to address historic infrastructure backlogs while promoting safe, vibrant, and resilient communities.
The agency looks forward to the official opening of the pool, which is expected to become a much-loved landmark and a catalyst for positive social impact in the area.
