The City of Ekurhuleni has resurfaced the busy Pretoria and Lazarus Mawela roads intersection in Primrose, bringing relief to commuters and enhancing safety near local schools.
The City of Ekurhuleni has successfully resurfaced the intersection of Pretoria and Lazarus Mawela roads, along with repainting the road markings.
A project that has been met with praise from both residents and local leadership.
Previously riddled with potholes, the intersection is a critical artery connecting airport routes to Germiston and the surrounding areas.
Its condition had long been a concern for motorists, especially given the heavy daily traffic from business trucks and parents dropping off and picking up learners at nearby Goudrif High School.
Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerreiro commended the municipality’s efforts.
“The city has done a good job in fixing the road and making sure the road markings are visible,” said Guerreiro. “Road safety is key in this case. We now have working streetlights and traffic lights.”
He noted that the next challenge would be unblocking the stormwater systems to prevent future road damage due to water running down the road surface.
John Marks, a daily commuter from Primrose, shared his relief at the improvements.
“The number of accidents on this road due to its bad condition was scary. Big trucks would dip into the potholes or get caught in caved-in sections of the road. “Taxis often swerved to avoid potholes, jamming up traffic,” he said.
Marks acknowledged that while accidents happen on any road, the state of Lazarus Mawela Road leading down to Germiston had posed a serious hazard.
The completed resurfacing is part of a broader initiative by the city to improve road infrastructure.
Guerreiro mentioned similar work done previously in Marlands, where road markings were also renewed by residents taking matters into their own hands to better their communities.
