The municipality confirmed that the Howick Municipal Swimming Pool had to be closed due to a serious water leak

The only public swimming pool in uMngeni Municipality remains closed for repairs, disappointing local pupils and residents, who have been turned away during the spring school holidays and hot days.

The municipality confirmed that the Howick Municipal Swimming Pool had to be closed due to a serious water leak, which required a full technical consultation and the appointment of a qualified service provider before repair work could begin.

The Witness understands that the leak from the pool would often run to nearby residences. In a statement, the municipality said that repairs and essential maintenance work have now commenced.

Along with fixing the leak, contractors are also servicing the pool’s pumps to ensure they operate at full capacity once reopened.

“We anticipate that all work will be completed by the end of October, with the pool scheduled to reopen on November 3,” the municipality said.

The closure has affected many pupils and residents, who had hoped to use the facility during the warmer spring weather and school holidays.

Several school groups reportedly arrived at the pool over the past few weeks, only to be turned away.
The open season for the pool is September to May each year.

One of the residents, who said they frequent the swimming pool during the open season, said they were disappointed and hoped once opened, it would be in a better condition.

“We stay not too far from the pool and I would take my children on weekends for a swim on hot days. It’s been disappointing that we couldn’t use the pool, especially during holidays when you need to find things to entertain the children.

“I am, however, hoping that the after these repairs, the pool will be in a much better state. At least it will be opened before December,” said Ayanda Nzuza.

Meanwhile, there have been concerns raised by residents about public drinking and rowdy behaviour at the pool. Speaking at a public meeting held at Howick West Hall over the weekend, Mayor Chris Pappas said the municipality has plans to deal with these concerns.

The pool has a security guard on site, who ensures that no alcohol enters the premises and that loud music is not permitted.
