The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for the Department of Human Settlements and Public Works, Ntuthuko Mahlaba, recently handed over 500 units of the KwaNzimakwe Rural Housing Project Phase One valued at R64 million.

The handover was also a launch of Phase Two of the KwaNzimakwe Rural Housing Project which will see the construction of 300 units.

MEC Mahlaba said the handover was part of celebrating his first 100 days in office as MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works.

The handover of the KwaNzimakwe Rural Housing Project came a few weeks after MEC Mahlaba handed over half of the 1 000 units of the Mzumbe Cluster C Rural Housing Project.

This project in the Mzumbe Municipality was for Wards 1,2, 3 and 4.
Mahlaba said the Mzumbe Cluster C Rural Housing Project was hit by several snags that resulted in the delay of the much-needed houses.

“The approved project value was for the amount of R144 million and the expenditure to date is at R89 Million. In 2019, Fezeka Business Services was appointed to complete the project. Progress to date has seen 511 completions with 754 houses at roof levels and 842 foundations slabs paid for,” said Mahlaba.

He added that during his visit in KwaNzimakwe, he visited the homestead of centenarian 105 year old Gogo Thembeka Mzize as well as a local nursery school where they donated a cake marking 100 days in office.

“Later on during the evening I hosted a get together with senior officials of both Departments of Human Settlements and Public Works at a secluded venue in Durban North to reflect on the strides made thus far during my first 100 days in office. I thanked staff members of both Departments under the respective stewardship of Human Settlements Head of Department Mdu Zungu and Public Works

Acting HOD Siboniso Majola for the sterling support they have given me since I assumed political leadership of the two Departments. I also urged the gathered officials to continue to place service delivery and serving the people of KwaZulu-Natal with diligence and dedication as they have been doing and pledged his support in whatever service delivery endeavours they were involved in,” said Mahlaba.
