The repair brings an end to the long wait that daily commuters on the road had to endure.

Motorists can once again travel freely along Hendrik Potgieter Road near Hillfox Value Centre after a sinkhole in the area was fully repaired and the road reopened.

The section had been closed while investigations and repairs were carried out. Work on the affected area was completed on Wednesday, January 21, ending weeks of disruption for commuters.

A visit by the Roodepoort Northsider on Friday, January 23, confirmed that traffic is moving normally in both directions. Some construction materials remain at the roadside, but no barricades or closures are in place.

Initial problems were identified in early October when a sinkhole formed on the road shoulder between Albert Street and Rhinoceros Road. Residents and motorists raised concerns, which led to repair work starting in late November after contractors were appointed.

During repairs, the damaged section was excavated, the ground beneath the road was strengthened, and the road surface was restored. Contractors previously indicated the process would take about three to four weeks, depending on weather conditions and any unexpected disruptions.

The incident highlights the difficulty of maintaining roads built on dolomitic land, which is common in parts of Gauteng and can increase the risk of sinkholes if not properly managed. Provincial authorities have emphasised the importance of early monitoring and regular maintenance to prevent similar incidents.

Residents welcomed the reopening of the road, and the remaining construction materials are expected to be removed soon.
