The Hector Peterson Memorial Library closed on Monday, March 2, as construction begins on a major R14.8 million upgrade project expected to last six months.
An updated risk assessment for the planned renovations found that it would be safest to close the entire facility for the duration of the works, said the City of Cape Town in a statement.
Initially, the project team had anticipated only a partial closure during the final phase, but revised construction plans identified potential public safety risks.
The upgrade will double the size of the library and provide additional study spaces, a larger children’s section and improvements to its SmartCape facilities.
Mayoral committee member for community services and health, Francine Higham, said the decision to close the facility was taken in the interest of public safety.
“The updated construction plan has highlighted a number of potential public risks. The library will therefore be closed for the duration of the construction and until the team is satisfied that the site is safe for patrons and staff,” she said.
During the closure, patrons are encouraged to make use of nearby libraries, including those in Strand, Gordon’s Bay, Somerset West and Sir Lowry’s Pass.
The library will continue its weekly Wednesday programmes at Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs) and pre-schools in Lwandle. These institutions will also receive bulk book loans to circulate among learners during the construction period.
Community members will be kept informed as the project progresses.
