The main structural work on the nearly R14.9 million Lwandle Library expansion is complete, and the project is now moving to internal finishes, services, and work around the building.
The upgrade and expansion, which began in March, is expected to be completed in November 2026 and will roughly double the library's size.
According to the City of Cape Town, work completed so far includes the main structural elements of the extension, roofing and alterations to the existing library.
The next stage of the project includes ceilings, flooring, painting and joinery, as well as a new entrance, signage and landscaping.
A modern facility for the Lwandle community
The City’s mayoral committee member for community services and health, Francine Higham, recently visited the library to view progress on the project.
“It was encouraging to see the progress made,” Higham said.
She said the expansion would create more opportunities for the community and provide an accessible environment where residents could read, study and access the internet.
The library building remains closed while construction is under way. However, library services are continuing in the community through weekly visits by the library team to early childhood development centres.
Outreach sessions
The Wednesday outreach sessions include storytelling, activities and block loans, allowing young children to continue accessing books and reading activities during the construction period.
"Libraries are important community spaces that provide safe and accessible environments for residents of all ages, so I am also pleased that the team is continuing to take books and reading activities to young children while construction is under way," Higham said.
Residents can also use neighbouring City libraries during the construction period, including Strand, Somerset West, Gordon’s Bay and Sir Lowry’s Pass public libraries.
The Lwandle library's expansion project is expected to be completed in November 2026.
