GEORGE NEWS - The Gwaiing road upgrade is progressing well and according to the most recent update from Garden Route Mayor Andrew Stroebel, processing and placement of the basecourse layer on the right-hand side lane is underway.

The Garden Route District Municipality's (GRDM) roads team resumed the project on 1 April. The project was previously halted when teams were redeployed to areas impacted by heavy rains.

Two kilometres of the basecourse has been placed on the right-hand side lane, and the construction of the remaining 2.4km is underway. This is the final layer before the bituminous surface gets applied.

Once the right-hand lane has been completed in full, the traffic flow will be relocated to the this lane, as the completion of the left-hand side lane will then start.

Focus also remains on the improvement of the stormwater drainage network, as new concrete lined side-drains are being cast along various sections of the road shoulder.

“As mentioned before, the GRDM Road Services Department is upgrading this road entirely in-house without any external contractor assistance, and this is commendable,” said Stroebel.

Herman Pieters, head of communications, said the estimated time of completion is February or March 2026, at the earliest.

"The December-January holiday closure and weather conditions impact the construction time. The department indicated it would take a minimum of 10 months from 1 April."
