Among many things the multi-million rand project will provide sustainable job opportunities and space to live work and play.
Umtentweni’s John Mason Park, a R640-million world-class mixed-used development looks set to go ahead.
Derrick Morris, chairman of the Umtentweni Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association broke the news last night (Wednesday) at the ratepayers’ monthly meeting, saying the leases have finally been signed by Ugu District Municipality, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) and the DAKU Group.
John Mason Park is situated in Umtentweni and is about 7.89 hectares in size, with more than one kilometre of sea frontage.
The exciting concept includes residential units, conference facility, apartment type facility, offices, hotel, gym, amphitheatre, waterpark, skate park, public auditorium and restaurant facilities.
Morris said they have been busy with the proposed development project for the last five years.
The key partners in this investment are and have been working alongside the Development Bank of Southern Africa, Department of Economic, Small Business, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Ugu District, KZN Growth Fund, Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, Interland and Hilton Group.
Derrick Morris, chairman of the Umtentweni Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association shows the suggested entrance to development.
Those behind the project’s implementation structure are Nedbank and Development Bank of Southern Africa for funding, DAKU Residential Properties as the developer, Interland and Hilton as anchor tenants and Public Service Commission for approvals and the Ugu South Coast Development Agency for land and approvals.
Morris said the signing of the leases was the biggest obstacle, and now with that out of the way, he positively predicts it will take about a further three years to wrap up before the first brick is laid.
Morris says it’s certainly very exciting for the South Coast and he wanted to allay fears and rumours of low cost housing being erected in this area.
“My only concern is where the entrance will be, but more than likely it will be opposite JTV Centre, off Commercial Road,” he said.
The development will contribute towards local economic growth, sustainable job opportunities and space to live, work and play.
To add to the news, it’s believed that other developments will also be taking place in and around Umtwentweni.
