Mayor Thandi Zitha says residents piling building sand on the newly paved road are creating hazards and undermining completed work.

LIMPOPO – Greater Giyani Municipality Mayor Thandi Zitha has called for the speedy completion of the 5.1km road paving project at Babangu village, saying the road is vital for the daily movement of residents and should be completed without unnecessary delays.

Progress encouraging, says mayor

Zitha made the remarks during a site inspection of the project, where she assessed progress and engaged with the contractor responsible for the construction.

She said she was encouraged by the progress made so far, noting that completed sections of the road were already being used by motorists even before the project had reached completion stage.

The mayor said the road is expected to be completed by next month, with only about 1.8km of paving work still outstanding.

“The work is progressing well, and you can already see that some motorists have started using sections of the road.”

“Although we are satisfied with the progress made so far, we have encouraged the contractor to ensure that the remaining work is completed as quickly as possible because this road is important to the people who use it every day,” she said.

Sand piling a growing concern

While expressing satisfaction with the pace of construction, Zitha raised concerns about some residents who have begun placing building sand and other materials on the newly paved sections of the road.

She warned that the practice not only damages municipal infrastructure but also creates a safety risk for motorists and pedestrians.

“We are concerned that some residents have started piling building sand and other materials on the newly paved road. This creates unnecessary hazards for motorists and undermines the work that has already been completed,” she said.

Municipality to step in if needed

The mayor appealed to residents to remove any obstructions voluntarily, warning that the municipality would intervene if necessary.

“We appeal to residents to remove the sand. If they fail to do so, we will send our TLB to remove it because we want to keep this road clean and safe for everyone,” she said.

Drainage infrastructure causing delays

Zitha also highlighted one of the main challenges affecting the project, saying water pipes and drainage infrastructure located in the middle of the road had slowed construction in certain sections.

She said the municipality would engage Mopani District Municipality to resolve the matter as soon as possible to prevent further delays.

“We need the contractor to complete the remaining work without further delays,” she said.
