gautrain tunnelling resumes

johannesburg - motorists will experience sequential closures along oxford road as the gautrain tunnelling process carries on, the bombela concession company said on tuesday.

bombela said it had received permission from the department of minerals and energy to resume excavations.

work was stopped recently after a massive hole appeared in the busy northern suburbs artery, as engineers drill a tunnel under the road for the trains that will link up johannesburg with sandton, pretoria and the or tambo international airport.

"temporary road diversions will be implemented in line with the tunnelling progress, in three phases, affecting both the northbound and southbound lanes," bombela said tuesday.

the first phase, affecting the portion of oxford road between north road and 8th avenue, currently in place, is anticipated to remain until early august.

details of the further two phases up to riviera road would be communicated in due course.

"access and egress to residents and businesses will be maintained during the diversions."

to avoid traffic congestion during the temporary diversions, bombela appealed to motorists to use the diversions only when specifically travelling to destinations within the immediate area.
