MERAFONG – Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has led a hands-on service delivery intervention in Merafong to tackle potholes, improve road safety and restore cleaner public spaces, working alongside the local municipality to deliver visible results for residents.
The MEC was joined by Merafong Executive Mayor Cllr Nozuko Best and senior officials from the provincial department and the municipality. The effort forms part of the Aga Le Rona accelerated service delivery programme, which focuses on fast-tracking practical improvements across roads and related infrastructure over an intensive two-month period.
Immediate Actions Taken on the Ground
Teams moved quickly into action with pothole patching on key routes, litter picking and general cleaning of public areas, fresh road markings to improve visibility and safety, and broader beautification work across parts of the municipality. These steps were chosen because they deliver noticeable change in a short space of time while addressing everyday frustrations that residents face when travelling to work, school or the shops.
Pothole patching helps prevent further damage to vehicles and reduces the risk of accidents, especially on routes used by heavy mining trucks and minibus taxis that form the backbone of transport in the area. Road markings make driving safer at night and help pedestrians cross more confidently. Cleaning and beautification lift the overall look of neighbourhoods and prevent litter from blocking drains during heavy rain.
Aga Le Rona: A Sustained Push for Visible Change
The Aga Le Rona programme is not a once-off event. It is designed as a focused, accelerated drive that brings together provincial resources and local government teams to tackle backlogs that have built up over time. By concentrating efforts over a defined period, the aim is to produce measurable improvements that communities can see and feel quickly, while longer-term road rehabilitation projects continue in parallel.
MEC Diale-Tlabela stressed that the work is about more than fixing surfaces. “This intervention forms part of Aga Le Rona programme which is aimed at accelerating visible service delivery over a two-month period, with immediate activities undertaken today including pothole patching, litter picking and cleaning, road markings, and general beautification of the municipality,” the MEC said.
She added that the approach is collaborative and ongoing. “This programme is about restoring dignity and ensuring that our communities experience real change. We are bringing all our resources together and working collaboratively with municipalities to fast-track service delivery,” said MEC Diale-Tlabela.
Why Merafong Roads Need Urgent Attention
Merafong, with its mining history and mix of urban and semi-rural settlements around Carletonville, Fochville and surrounding areas, faces particular pressures on its road network. Heavy vehicles linked to mining operations place extra strain on surfaces, while older infrastructure and occasional sinkhole risks in parts of the region add to maintenance challenges. Residents have long raised concerns about deteriorating roads that damage cars, slow down taxis and create safety hazards for families.
The current intervention targets these pain points directly through quick-response teams while the province and municipality continue planning for more substantial upgrades. By starting with highly visible work such as patching and markings, the teams are able to restore basic functionality and safety on busy routes without waiting for full reconstruction projects that take longer to complete.
Working Together for Lasting Results
The provincial Department of Roads and Transport and Merafong Local Municipality are coordinating closely so that resources and teams are used effectively. This joint approach helps avoid duplication and ensures that work done today supports longer-term plans for the area’s road network. Community stakeholders are also being brought into the process to help identify priority spots and keep the momentum going.
The department has made it clear that this kind of intensive intervention will continue in Merafong and other parts of Gauteng. The focus remains on delivering practical outcomes rather than announcements, with regular monitoring to track progress and adjust plans where needed.
What Residents Can Expect Next
Over the coming weeks, more teams are expected to cover additional streets and problem areas identified during today’s activities. Pothole repairs will be followed up where necessary to make fixes more durable, while cleaning and beautification will help maintain a sense of order and pride in public spaces. Road markings will improve safety on routes that carry school children, workers and emergency vehicles every day.
For many families in Merafong, better roads mean fewer unexpected repair bills, smoother trips to work or clinic, and greater peace of mind when children walk or travel by taxi. For local businesses and the mining sector that still plays a big role in the local economy, reliable access routes support daily operations and reduce costly delays.
The intervention shows a clear commitment to turning plans into action on the ground. By combining quick visible wins with sustained collaboration between province and municipality, Gauteng is working to give Merafong communities the safer, cleaner and more dignified road environment they deserve.
