Franschhoek Pass, which connects Franschhoek to the towns of Grabouw and Villiersdorp, will be closed on weekdays between 8am and 5pm for construction.

This will impact travel schedules and necessitate alternate routes.

Closure schedule:

Dates: From 8 January 2024 to the end of February 2024.
Weekday hours: Closed between 8am and 5pm.
Weekends: Open throughout.

Daily closures will allow for the resumption of construction work that was announced in December 2023.

Construction will include soil-nailing work, a process that involves drilling metal tendons into the soil to enhance slope stability, necessitating extensive use of heavy machinery and large working areas.

Travel advisories:

Light motor vehicles are permitted outside closure hours but must adhere to a 5-tonne weight restriction.
Vehicles over 5 tonnes are prohibited at all times.
Alternative routes are strongly recommended for all road users.

Tertuis Simmers, the Western Cape’s provincial minister of infrastructure, expressed gratitude to the teams for resuming work ahead of schedule and urged road users to observe closure times and signage for safety.

‘Thank you to our teams that have resumed construction work at the site. Notably, a week ahead of the sector’s traditional return from “builders’ break”. This is, however, consistent with the commitment made last year to have the road closed from the 8 January and allow for the restoration works to proceed uninterrupted.’

‘I urge our road users to take note of the scheduled daily closures and adhere to the signs. The safety of all road users remains our primary concern,’ concluded the minister.
