The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has reached a key milestone in the MyCiTi Phase 2A project with the first red bus lanes now being cast along AZ Berman Drive in Mitchell's Plain.
The development marks "visible progress" on the long-awaited upgrade of the corridor, which is nearing completion, said City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The upgrade of AZ Berman Drive, including dedicated MyCiTi bus lanes, is approaching its final stages, with the last traffic switch planned for next Friday, June 26.

Quintas said residents and businesses have shown patience during the extended construction period. He said the appearance of the red bus lanes signals that the project is moving toward completion, with improved public transport infrastructure on the way.
He said, “The project will deliver a safer and more reliable bus service with dedicated lanes designed to reduce travel times, alongside new stations, stops, and upgraded infrastructure.”
He said it forms part of the City’s broader strategy to improve mobility across Cape Town and is expected to be largely completed during the course of this year, with some remaining work scheduled for February next year, ("Signboards show 'Plain bus project progress"' Plainsman May 28, 2025).
The upcoming traffic switch will take place between the BP service station and the Mitchells' Plain Police Station. Traffic will move from the current northbound lane towards Cape Town into the newly completed southbound lane towards Mitchell's Plain.
Two lanes will be open in each direction, with cones and road markings separating traffic through the work zone.
Further upgrades along AZ Berman Drive include improvements to street signage, lighting, landscaping, stormwater drainage, technology infrastructure, ducting, road markings, and traffic signals.
Additional works include widening at the eastern bridge abutment at the R300 intersection, which is largely complete with finishing work underway, as well as ongoing construction and finishing of MyCiTi stations at Sesame, Marguerite, and Kerrem Street intersections.
The final phase of the project will include the construction of a separate Non-Motorised Transport Facility along the eastern side of AZ Berman Drive, scheduled for completion in February 2027 if all goes according to plan, he said.
