Hundreds of Mooidraai residents attending a mass meeting recently chaired by Free State provincial government amid construction headaches in their community.
SASOLBURG – The Free State Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements visited Zamdela Ext 18, popularly known as Mooidraai, amid construction project headaches.
Led by MEC Saki Mokoena, several government officials, including Metsimaholo Local Municipality Mayor Jack Malindi, councillors, and senior municipal management, addressed community members with the hope of finding solutions that will see the project moving forward.
Hundreds of residents gathered at ‘Huising’ where they raised their grievances that entail the construction of water and sewerage reticulation for 3 075 sites, a project totalling R180m.
Some of the challenges that the project faces are that about 13 structures have been built along the pipeline route, which prevents the contractor from connecting the sewer and water pipelines.
Speaking to Ster, community leader Teleki Tats explained some problems the people have been facing, such as allocation of stands, data capturing, and issuing of occupational certificates, among many other issues.
“The problems we have emanate as far back as 2021. We’ve been calling on the municipality to help address these challenges so that when services are allocated, people won’t have any issues,” he said.
“The most important thing that the community is aggrieved with is the allocation, getting their stands serviced, and most importantly getting allocation certificates,” he added.
Tats said they have tried to raise their problems with the municipality, but their grievances have fallen on deaf ears.
“The municipality has never come to the people, until residents wrote a petition to the national committee. We are glad that the provincial structure has decided to come to the people and listen to their problems,” he said.
Addressing the gathered crowds, MEC Mokoena said they will be going to find documents that confirm the amount for the project.
“We’ve also heard your safety grievances, and we are going to make sure that the contractor produces safety for the community and the workers,” he said.
Mokoena said they will return to the residence following deliberations on the issues.
