Residents using the Loxton Road Bridge in Milnerton can expect ongoing maintenance work over the coming months as the City of Cape Town carries out repairs aimed at extending the lifespan of the crossing.
The upgrades to the bridge, which connects Marine Drive with the Woodbridge Island parking area, are expected to be completed by Monday, December 1.
According to the City's Urban Mobility Directorate, construction is taking place from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.
Mayco member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, said the work is intended to preserve an important community link.
The project includes replacing the existing timber balustrades with galvanised steel balustrades, repairing damaged concrete piers and applying a protective coating to all concrete surfaces.
"It's just another way we are helping keep Cape Town moving across our rivers, streams and waterways," Quintas said.
Pedestrian access across the bridge will remain available throughout the construction period, although the City warned that sections of the walkway may be temporarily closed to create safe working areas for construction teams.
Where this is necessary, pedestrians will be directed to use the opposite walkway or designated alternative routes.
The City has urged commuters and pedestrians to exercise caution while travelling through the area and to allow additional travel time where necessary.
"Clear signage, barriers and traffic accommodation measures will be in place to ensure the safe movement of pedestrians and workers," the City said.
