Enza Construction and Property Point have announced a pioneering partnership that places SMEs at the heart of school construction across four communities in Gauteng – Soshanguve, Doornpoort (nearing completion) and Olievenhoutbosch (underway).

At the core of the initiative lies the belief that educational infrastructure projects can serve as powerful engines of local economic development, says Property Point, with nearly 80% of construction work on these sites being carried out by local SMEs who are supported by targeted procurement, training, and mentorship.

Shawn Theunissen, founder of Property Point, says the initiative goes beyond building schools – it is about building a long-term and prosperous future for entire communities. “When we empower local businesses and workers to participate meaningfully in these projects, we stimulate economic ecosystems that continue to generate impact long after the ribbon is cut.”

Property Point has designed and is executing a community-focused engagement model, ensuring that local labour and small contractors are included and uplifted through the process. From plumbing and electrical work to bricklaying and steel construction, these local SMEs are delivering core aspects of each build while gaining experience, technical guidance and compliance support to strengthen their long-term viability.

“We are demonstrating what’s possible when infrastructure investment is aligned with social impact,” says Theunissen. “For too long, township communities have been seen as passive recipients of infrastructure. We’re proving they can be co-creators of physical spaces as well as thriving local economies.”

With labour sourced directly from host communities, on-site training in trade skills such as plumbing and steel fixing is creating a pipeline of skilled workers ready to serve future development in the region.

In collaboration with Enza Construction, Property Point is also managing complex stakeholder dynamics, ensuring transparent communication and resolving challenges such as payment delays and labour allocation disputes – all while maintaining timelines and quality standards.

Both Enza Construction and Property Point have signalled their intention to embed this economic development model into all future public infrastructure projects.

“We are at the beginning of a paradigm shift in how we think about infrastructure,” concludes Theunissen. “These projects show that when we invest in people and potential, we can transform learning environments as well as the socio-economic trajectory of entire communities.”
