Ekurhuleni marks major transport upgrades as Transport Month concludes

The City of Ekurhuleni has wrapped up Transport Month by showcasing key infrastructure improvements that enhance safety and connectivity across the metro.

As Transport Month (October) comes to an end, the City of Ekurhuleni has reaffirmed its commitment to building a safer, more efficient, and better-connected transport network for all residents.

According to the City, several major infrastructure milestones were achieved during the review period, reflecting its dedication to improving accessibility and road safety.

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, stated that the ongoing upgrades are part of a broader plan to enhance traffic flow, reduce accidents, and ensure reliable mobility for commuters.

Among the highlights were the installation of new traffic lights at key intersections in Kempton Park and the addition of 164 streetlights in various areas. Mngwevu said these improvements are both functional and essential for public safety.

“Clear and visible signage is not just a regulatory requirement; it’s a critical tool in preventing accidents and ensuring smoother, safer journeys for all road users,” he said.

The City also reported major progress in road maintenance. During the 2024/ 25 financial year, Ekurhuleni repaired and closed thousands of potholes – a significant step toward improving road reliability and driving conditions.

Public transport services continued to play a vital role in connecting communities.

The Ekurhuleni Bus Service facilitated over 500 000 commuter trips, while the Harambee Bus Rapid Transit system transported more than 1.7 million passengers during the same period.

These figures highlight the City’s commitment to providing affordable, dependable, and inclusive mobility options.

Looking ahead, Mngwevu said the City remains focused on expanding sustainable transport solutions through continued infrastructure upgrades and road rehabilitation projects.

“Though Transport Month has ended, our journey toward a smarter, safer, and more inclusive transport system carries on – with purpose, with passion, and with the people of Ekurhuleni at the heart of it all,” he said.

The City’s achievements form part of its Transport Month programme, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of efficient, safe, and sustainable transport systems in driving economic growth and community development.
