Sanral has advised motorists to be aware of the temporary closure taking place on Saturday, October 11 to Monday, October 13 from 6pm to 4am.
Motorists travelling between Amanzimtoti and the Durban CBD should brace for delays this weekend as the EB Cloete interchange ramp will be closed from Saturday evening to Monday morning for roadworks by the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral).
The closure, from 6 pm on Saturday, October 11, to 4 am on Monday, October 13, affects the N2 northbound to N3 eastbound connection into Durban.
According to Jason Lowe, Sanral’s KwaZulu-Natal specialist geometrics engineer, the closure forms part of the broader improvements to the interchange.
The temporary closure is necessary to accommodate construction activity in a safe and controlled manner.
He added that the initiative forms part of the company’s efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and improve traffic infrastructure along both the N2 and N3 corridors.
Sanral said in a statement that, for the required safety of both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place.
All motorists are advised to plan, allow for additional travel time, and adhere to posted signage and reduced speed limits within construction zones.
Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period and/or find suitable staging areas over this timeframe to avoid major congestion.
Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes.
“Sanral appreciates the public’s patience and co-operation as it undertakes this vital project to alleviate long-term traffic congestion in the area and appeals to road users to note and comply with the advance warning signs and speed restrictions when travelling past the construction work zones,” Lowe said.
To prioritise the safety of both the construction workers and road users, the speed limit along the route is reduced during construction.
