Since the start of term 3, the young learners at the school have allegedly not set foot in class.

Over 2 000 young learners from Dulcie September Primary School have lost eight days of schooling since the start of term 3.

This is due to contractor delays in removing the container classrooms to allow the Gauteng Department of Education to begin building brick-and-mortar classrooms for the young learners.

When Midrand Reporter visited the school on July 29, learners were roaming around the school yard unmonitored.

Johnson Siko, whose child is in Grade 7 at the school, said as parents, they were concerned about the delayed construction, which he said started a week before the schools re-opened for the third term.

“The school is not operating, and it’s currently posing a hazardous environment for both teachers and learners. This affects the learning process, which leads some kids to fail their grades at the end of the year,” said Siko.

He said they want the department to tell them the way forward.

“There’s no teaching and learning, but every day our children are kept here, and they roam around. They go in and out as they please, and they could be abducted.”

SGB chairperson Candice Howard said they were promised that the classrooms would be ready by the start of the term.

“We are worried about the time wasted here. Only yesterday [July 28] learners were put in class, but I am not sure if they were taught because the environment is not conducive,” she said.
The Gauteng Department of Education was contacted to clarify the delays and how they plan to recoup the lost time.
