Cape Town’s ambitious MyCiTi Phase 2A rollout has reached another significant milestone after construction teams completed the installation of the massive bridge beams that will form part of the new Duinefontein Bridge.

The complex engineering operation, carried out over five days, saw crews transport and lift pre-cast concrete beams measuring about 36 metres in length and weighing roughly 40 tonnes each into position at the busy Duinefontein Road and Govan Mbeki Road intersection.

As highlighted by the City of Cape Town, the successful beam installation marks another key step towards completing infrastructure that will eventually connect commuters from Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and neighbouring communities with Claremont and Wynberg.

While motorists experienced temporary road closures between 1 and 5 August to accommodate the heavy lifting operation, the work represents one of the most visible stages of the bridge’s construction.

Large cranes were brought in to carefully position each beam, with engineers overseeing the process to ensure the installation was completed safely.

For thousands of residents who travel between the metro south-east and Cape Town’s southern suburbs every day, the bridge is expected to become an important piece of infrastructure once the wider MyCiTi Phase 2A project is completed.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, thanked residents and commuters for their patience during the temporary disruptions.

‘The successful installation of these bridge beams marks another important milestone in the construction of the new Duinefontein Bridge and the MyCiTi Phase 2A project. I would like to thank residents, commuters and motorists for their patience and cooperation during the temporary road closures.’

Quintas added that the upgrades would help move Cape Town closer to delivering ‘a safe, reliable and integrated public transport system’ that better connects communities across the metro south-east while supporting the city’s long-term mobility goals.
