Ark Academy in Extension 5 reaches a major construction milestone using ecobricks, but urgently seeks help to finish its new learning space safely.

Construction of Ark Academy’s new permanent learning centre in Diepsloot Ext 5 is 90% complete, but the early childhood development (ECD) school requires assistance with roofing, plastering and finishing work before learners can move in.

The progress follows months of fundraising, community support and efforts to build a safer environment for children.

School principal Mochaiki Mothapo confirmed that remaining work includes roofing and applying a plastic rain cover to complete the facility.

Mothapo said the school aims to create a facility that meets Department of Basic Education standards relating to safety, health and building conditions. The centre previously faced difficult conditions at its existing premises, including roof leaks during winter and rainy weather, forcing staff to use plastic sheeting to protect children.

“For me, it’s about making sure that the children can move into a proper place,” said Mothapo.

The centre is constructed using ecobricks to keep costs low. The walls feature hundreds of plastic bottles packed with waste, repurposing discarded materials into structural elements.

While individuals and organisations have provided materials such as cement, the school remains open to contributions of roofing materials, skills or other support from businesses and community members. Mothapo extended appreciation to UDE Power for its contributions, stating the project would not have been possible without them.
