Diep River roads set for major congestion relief

A major road upgrade at one of the Southern Suburbs’ busy intersections is moving into its next phase, with construction already under way at the junction of De Waal, Kendal and Main Roads in Diep River.

The project, which began in July 2026, is scheduled for completion in August 2027 and is expected to increase road capacity while improving traffic movement through the intersection.

The City of Cape Town says excavation along Kendal Road has been completed, with preparations now shifting towards the next stage of construction.

The latest progress was outlined by the City after Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility Councillor Rob Quintas, project managers and senior officials visited the site on 25 August.

Telecommunications infrastructure is being relocated as part of the works, while tree removals have been completed. Service ducts and mole barriers have also been installed along Main Road.

Quintas said the project is intended to address congestion at a strategically important Southern Suburbs junction.

‘This project is about reducing congestion, improving traffic flow and making this important Southern Suburbs junction work better for everyone,’ he highlighted.

He added that the construction programme is expected to continue until August 2027, subject to the project progressing as planned.

The changes will be rolled out in stages, beginning with Kendal Road before moving to Main Road and then De Waal Road.

Kendal Road will receive an additional lane, including a dedicated bus lane. Main Road will also be widened, while De Waal Road is planned to expand to four lanes.

‘We are currently focused on widening Kendal Road, which will be followed by the widening of Main Road and then De Waal Road,’ Quintas said.

The existing road network is significant for motorists travelling between several major routes, as De Waal and Kendal Roads currently operate as single carriageways linking the M3, Main Road (M4) and Prince George Drive (M5).

In the longer term, the City’s plan is for these roads to be extended to connect with the R300, although the current project is focused on the improvements around the Diep River intersection.

Work is taking place from Mondays to Thursdays between 7:30am and 5:30pm, Fridays from 7:30am to 2:30pm and Saturdays from 7:30am to 2pm.

The construction programme means that motorists and residents in the surrounding area will encounter work activity over the coming year.

The City has acknowledged that the project may cause disruption while the upgrades are being carried out and has appealed for patience from residents and road users.

‘These road improvements will continue until August 2027, if all goes as planned, and we would like to thank residents and road users for their patience while we continue working to keep Cape Town moving,’ Quintas stated.

Once the work is completed, the upgraded intersection will have greater road capacity, including additional lanes and a bus lane on Kendal Road.

The City says the improvements are intended to ease congestion and improve traffic flow through an area that serves as a link between several established transport routes in the Southern Suburbs.

For people who use the roads regularly, the project will therefore unfold in stages rather than as a single construction intervention. Kendal Road is the immediate focus, with Main Road and De Waal Road to follow.

The work is scheduled to continue through August 2027, making the intersection a significant construction zone for much of the next year as the City progresses with its broader plans to improve mobility along this part of Cape Town’s road network.
