Princess informal settlement is built over stormwater pipes, resulting in ponding or flooding on Albertina Sisulu Road, which has become dilapidated.

Last week, the Roodepoort Record reported on community members and businesses tackling the terrible state of Albertina Sisulu Road passing through the Princess informal settlement.

The residents confirmed that land markings were conducted by the Department of Human Settlements a few years ago to identify the houses that need to be moved in order for the Johannesburg Road Agency to access the stormwater infrastructure.

However, the department commented, saying they are not aware of the ponding/ flooding in the street due to the informal settlement encroaching on and being built over the city’s road and stormwater infrastructure.

Penwell Dhlamini from the the Department said, “We are in the process of addressing the problem. To date, environmental authorisation has been obtained for various pockets of land earmarked for development.”

Dhlamini adds that alternative vacant land is required for the decanting of households within the settlement, and the department is in negotiations with landowners of land parcels in the Roodepoort area for relocation purposes.
