Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure Ernest Rachoene visited the D500 road on Wednesday, 29 May. The department is rehabilitating the 12km gravel road that links Tshiendeulu, Mazwimba and Maname.
The road had long been in poor condition, with potholes and a slippery surface during the rainy season. Residents say the road makes travel difficult and damages vehicles.
Rachoene said the project aimed to revitalise the province’s gravel roads through blading, re-gravelling and de-bushing. “Given that most of our roads are gravel, this intervention is essential. It ensures our roads remain in good condition, free from potholes, and safe for all road users,” he said.
“The maintenance of an integrated road infrastructure not only ensures safe road usage but also facilitates socio-economic development, especially in rural areas,” he added.
Community leader Mr Azwindini Netshiendeulu said the government had finally responded to residents’ long-standing pleas. “It took the government very long to finally answer our pleas, but now we appreciate the good work the contractor has done. They worked at a satisfactory pace too,” he said. “Some people could not get to work or arrived late because the road was so bad.”
Mr Mulatedzi Mulaudzi of the Dzanani Taxi Association welcomed the improvements. “I am very happy now that the community does not have to worry about the road when it rains hard anymore, and bumpy rides will be a thing of the past,” he said. “Our vehicles will last longer, and it will be easier to move around.”
