After years of delays, work on the Thomo-to-Hlomela road has begun, with Sanral saying the project is 22% complete and on track.

LIMPOPO – After more than a decade of delays and broken promises, construction is finally underway on the D3810 road in Giyani, also known as the Thomo-to-Hlomela road.

This 29km route passes through Thomo, Khakhala, Gawula, Ndindani, Mahlathi, and Hlomela, connecting these villages to the tarred road leading to Phalaborwa.

For years, residents relied on a gravel road that became nearly impassable during rainy seasons, disrupting daily life and travel. Despite government promises to tar the road since 2012, progress stalled, leaving villagers frustrated and doubtful.

“We only believed the project was real when construction trucks arrived last year,” said community representative Tiyiselani Khumbhuza. The breakthrough came when Sanral took over the project, committing to complete the entire stretch in one phase.

Construction is now progressing steadily. Greater Giyani Municipality’s head of infrastructure, Thamsanqa Mabunda, recently inspected the site and reported no complaints or worker issues, which he described as “encouraging.” Sanral confirmed the project is 22% complete and on schedule for completion by May 13, 2027.

Villagers eagerly await the transformation of the dusty road into a modern tarred highway, viewing it as a vital step toward development and improved quality of life.

The upgraded road will enhance safety, reduce travel times, and improve public transport reliability. Access to schools, clinics, markets, and other essential services will become easier, while local businesses anticipate growth through better connections to Giyani and Phalaborwa.

The D3810 road promises to open new economic opportunities and bring lasting benefits to the communities along its path.
