Months after burst pipes and dangerous potholes turned Bushwillow and Richard roads into a nightmare, major repairs have finally restored the intersection, and councillor David Foley says the area is now safer than ever.
After months of frustration and safety concerns, the intersection of Bushwillow and Richard roads has undergone a full transformation, and Ward 94 councillor David Foley couldn’t be more relieved.
Standing at the upgraded traffic circle on August 5, Foley reflected on the challenges that plagued the area, including persistent groundwater issues and a major pipe burst that left the road damaged and unsafe. “This traffic circle, a few months ago, was an absolute disaster zone, after the groundwater challenge we had, plus the pipe burst on the side of the road. Eventually, Johannesburg Water replaced the whole pipe, and that’s all been fixed up.”

According to Foley, while groundwater remains a concern, more interventions are planned. “We’re going to do some additional work with that a little bit later.”
Visibly pleased with the improvements, Foley pointed to the newly resurfaced road and restored infrastructure. “All the potholes have been filled. This section of the road has been resurfaced completely, all the way down to the bottom. The curbing was put back in place. The pedestrian walkway was fixed.”
The upgrades are not only cosmetic but vital for pedestrian and vehicle safety. “This makes it a much safer area for residents to traverse the circle. Now there will be no damage to anybody’s cars, and no sudden accidents to avoid potholes.”
New signage has also been installed to guide traffic through the circle correctly. Foley made a special plea to drivers. “The new signs are absolutely critical, and I would ask residents, please, when approaching a traffic circle, always slow down. The sign will tell you which lane to go to. Do not try to go over the middle of the circle and into somebody’s wall, which has happened a couple of times on this road.”
Foley advised residents and motorists to, “please be careful and drive slowly.”
