Works on this highly anticipated project slacked due to heavy rain experienced in January.

The Mpumalanga MEC for public works, roads and transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, said construction of the D1723 road, also known as Lihawu/Emoyeni Road, is being accelerated following the heavy rains experienced in January.

During his visit to the site on Tuesday, February 17, Thomo said the project remains on track to restore safe and reliable access for the community.

The road spans from the R538 to Mohlala Drive in Pienaar.

He said the purpose of the visit was to assess progress, confirm adherence to the revised schedule, and verify that the necessary interventions are yielding the desired results.

Thomo’s visit aims to recover lost time caused by the initial contractor, Ntlemo Projects, before the project was formally ceded last year.

In November 2025, Umdali Civils was appointed and scheduled to commence construction.
