The communities in and around Mankweng, say they will continue to halt the construction of a new student residence at the University of Limpopo until their demands are met.

The residents including those in Ga-Molepo, Ga-Mothapo, Ga-Mothiba, Ga-Mamabolo and Ga-Dikgale halted the project earlier today demanding that the construction company working on the project must appoint a Community Liaison Officer who has been selected by the community.

Polokwane municipality councillor in ward 26, Piet Mothiba says the residents are aggrieved that the contractor and sub-contractors are not local people, adding that no local employer or sub-contractor has been appointed.

Mothiba says the the community members are also concerned about not getting considered for job opportunities such as cleaning positions at the university.

Spokesperson for the University of Limpopo, Victor Kgomoeswana says however the construction of the new student residence is going ahead as normal.

Kgomoeswana says the residents are demanding that the construction company working on the project appoint a Community Liaison Officer who has been selected by the community.

Kgomoeswana says the university together with councillors of 13 wards it reports to including ward 26, and the Polokwane Municipality are finalising a community participation forum for the university.

He says the forum will enable the university to update the ward councillors about the work done at the university, admission of students, job opportunities and everything that affects the community.

Kgomoeswana says what Mothiba is doing is overlooking an inclusive community forum involving 13 wards.
