With 89% of construction finished, Katlehong Fire Station is set to open soon, featuring modern facilities, a medical centre, and accessible infrastructure, dispelling claims of delays or wastage.

The construction of Katlehong Fire Station is nearing completion, with 89% of the work already done.

This progress stands in stark contrast to circulating social media posts suggesting wastage and stagnation on the project.

MMC for Community Safety, Cllr Sizakele Masuku, visited the site on August 26 for oversight.

All electrical, mechanical, structural and building work has been completed.

“The remaining scope of work involves external tasks such as paving, testing of sewage and water systems, and delivery of offsite materials, including furniture and gym equipment,” said Masuku.

“The building was constructed in line with the latest guidelines for dolomitic areas. Durable materials were used from the foundation to the plumbing.

“High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes were installed, and the building rests on a raft foundation covering the entire footprint to protect it from earth movement and the formation of sinkholes,” he explained.

“The engine wash bay has a grease trap system designed to catch chemicals and oils before they reach the drainage system, allowing for cleaning before entering the sewage network.

“While the city continues to safeguard the building and all materials on site, work to finalise the project is at an advanced stage.

“The building will also host a state-of-the-art medical centre for emergency services, accommodate Mobile Besafe trucks, and feature accessible entrances for people with physical impairments,” said Masuku.
