The city has dedicated hundreds of millions to tackle the pothole crisis.

The CoE has resorted to exclusively using hot mix asphalt for pothole repairs and road rehabilitation – a significant shift in its road maintenance strategy.

A substantial R285m is allocated for a citywide pothole repair campaign. A further R50m will go to the Sivala Ama-pothole blitz, which also repaints road markings, installs traffic signs and clears stormwater drainage systems.

“The move to use hot mix asphalt means longer durability for our road network, improved resistance to wear and the reduced frequency and extent of repairs needed over time.

“It further means the overall lifecycle cost of road maintenance will decrease because the roads will last longer and require fewer interventions,” said the MMC for Roads and Transport Planning, Clr Andile Mngwevu.

“The city has already maintained 506km of roads in the current financial year alone, with a target to rehabilitate an additional 241km before the end of June.

“Ekurhuleni aims to keep its roads in good condition and drastically reduce the unsurfaced road backlogs in the next few years,” said the MMC, adding that the city aims to improve collaboration with the provincial government regarding the maintenance of provincial roads.

“The city also maintains 5 000 stormwater systems to prevent flooding and protect road infrastructure, especiallyduring the wet season.”

Residents and businesses are encouraged to report road infrastructure issues through the city’s call centre on 0860 543 000, X (CoE_Call_Centre) or the My CoE App.
