The City of Cape Town is moving forward with plans to redevelop the site, envisaging a mixed-use development.

Much like the Disa Park towers, the Cape Town Good Hope Centre's domed hall has residents divided about whether the structure is an eyesore, or iconic landmark.

Now, change is coming for the Good Hope Centre precinct as the City of Cape Town moves forward with plans to redevelop the site.

The Mayoral Committee (Mayco) has supported the recommendation by the Economic Growth Directorate to grant an in-principle approval to release the precinct for redevelopment to 'unlock its immense economic potential'.

Once approved, the property will be brought to market through a transparent public auction to find a developer who will breathe new life into the precinct, the City says.

This is expected to happen in early 2026.

The City envisages a mixed-use development including retail, commercial, residential and entertainment components.

It sees the redevelopment of the Good Hope Centre precinct representing one of the most significant inner-city regeneration opportunities in Cape Town.

The Centre remains an important landmark with significant historical, architectural, and cultural value, says James Vos, Mayco Member for Economic Growth.

"Exploring a partnership with a capable private-sector developer provides a sustainable and forward-looking solution to unlocking this precinct’s economic potential. This approach allows us to safeguard the site’s legacy while enabling its revitalisation in a manner that delivers broad public benefit."

Vos emphasizes that revenue generated from the sale will be used for city-wide service delivery, and that theredevelopment is projected to generate significant socio-economic benefits.
