malelane - emerging builders contracted to build low-cost houses in mpumalanga's deep rural nkomazi area can now get cheaper, better quality material on their doorstep.

the provincial department of local government has set up a bulk-buying centre in naas, south of malelane, as a pilot project where local builders can buy sabs approved materials at a lower price.

"builders starting their own businesses usually don't have enough start-up capital and they then settle for sub-standard materials," said department spokesman simphiwe kunene.

he said this resulted in poorly built houses.

at the centre, the builders will also be able to buy on credit and will only have to settle their debt when they receive payment from the government.

the facility will only be available to contractors who are contracted by the department, however.

local government mec jabu mahlangu launched the pilot project on monday and aims eventually to introduce similar centres at the other 16 local municipalities in the province.

mr mahlangu also launched an on-site training programme where emerging builders will be taught to build according to regulations.
