builders warned of tough months ahead

the bargaining council for the building industry (bibc) has sent out a word to the industry to expect a tough month ahead due to the number of public holidays that fall in april and may.

not only will the industry find itself low on productivity, which is exacerbated by the general slow down in this sector, but employers will be further out of pocket as they are regulated to pay employees for days not worked due to public holidays.

there are in total five public holidays over a three week period this year, due to the additional holiday declared for the general elections. “in addition to easter weekend, we have election day, freedom day and workers day, making this a very difficult period for the building industry, as well the general economy,” said strydom, secretary for building industry bargaining council (cape of good hope).

the council has urged building contractors to bite the bullet and comply with the labour act. “taking into account that roughly only half of the industry is presently registered and compliant, we are appealing to the industry at large to abide by the law and pay their workers over this period,” concluded strydom.
