The roads department has started clearing drainage infrastructure, with resurfacing expected once conditions improve.

Motorists travelling along the intersection of Hospital and Main Reef roads in and out of Brakpan North may soon see relief as long-awaited repair work started on May 25.

The damaged section of road, with potholes described as craters, has for months posed a serious hazard to motorists.

Dozens of motorists have suffered tyre and wheel damage to their vehicles after striking the potholes, with drivers often forced to swerve to avoid them.

This intersection carries heavy daily traffic in and out of Brakpan North, making the deteriorating condition a major concern

Residents previously complained to the Brakpan Herald about reporting the issue to the City of Ekurhuleni on multiple occasions, to no avail.

Ward 97 councillor Brandon Pretorius also previously stated there is a trench along this road that needs to be opened to prevent flooding and to allow for pothole repairs, but intimidation from illegal miners made it impossible for crews to operate safely.

On Monday, Pretorius met with the Brakpan Roads Department on site, where work commenced to clear the blocked trench.

“The department has received the much-needed equipment to clear the trenches that were blocked and in return caused the road to be flooded with water constantly, leaving the corner of the road undriveable,” he said.

“At this stage it seems that the department is winning and the trench is now being opened, which means that the water can naturally run through the culvert as it is designed to, and in return there will be no water constantly on the road.”

Pretorius added that while the immediate focus is on clearing the drainage system, road resurfacing is expected to follow.

“We will keep residents updated as we progress with what is happening here, but we do expect to see road resurfacing happening soon, which will hopefully take some pressure off residents of Brakpan, as this has been a headache for quite some time,” he said.
