the airports company south africa (acsa) has issued two tenders seeking consultant teams for the upgrade of the international arrivals terminal and international pier development at johannesburg international airport (jia), which forms part of the company’s r3,8-billion upgrades project, started in september this year.
acsa is intending to appoint a multi-disciplinary team of consultants, which would embark on the design, construction and implementation of these two projects.
the company states that the consultants must demonstrate their relevant experience, specialist ability and black economic empowerment initiatives in order for it to draw up a shortlist of prospective bidders.
for each project, acsa stipulates that it requires a team consisting of a project manager, architect, quantity surveyor, civil engineer, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer and an airport commercial or retail specialist.
in september, the company issued three tenders involving various upgrade initiatives at both jia and cape town international airport, whereby the company sought three contractors to build its new apron development at jia.
the company, which is spending r952-million on runways, taxiways and aprons at both airports, will start building a new apron at jia at the beginning of 2004, to increase the airport capacity to 20-million passengers by 2030.
project manager of the apron developments for jia riaan swanepoel said that no contractors have yet been assigned to the project, as acsa is still developing the plans for the venture.
he said this development should only start late next year, after a contractor has been awarded the bid.
swanepoel revealed, however, that development would start on the upgrade of the international arrivals terminal and the international pier at jia, in about april 2004.
bids for these projects must be submitted by december 12, 2003, and shortly thereafter, swanepoel said, bidders will be shortlisted for approval, so late submissions will not be considered.
