57 villages to receive tap water

east london - the amatole district municipality (adm) has approved four tenders for water supply-related projects set to benefit 57 villages in the municipal area.

the projects, funded by the municipality, consolidated municipal infrastructure programme (cmip) and the department of water affairs and forestry (dwaf), were approved at a council meeting held here last week.

they will benefit thousands of rural households who depend on drinking stagnant water from dams and rivers.

one of the projects approved is to improve windmills and boreholes in 10 villages around idutywa, identified as being in need of emergency repairs.
the villages are ziwundwana, mazizini, sikobeni, keti, mbewuleni, sinqumeni, gxarha, vonqo, nywarha and qora.

the r1 215897 phase one project will focus on upgrading boreholes, windmills, reservoirs and the provision of water to villagers residing near the boreholes.

the project is expected to take six months and is to be followed by the upgrade of reticulation systems as well as the upgrade and extension of infrastructure to provide water according to rural development programme standards.

the second project is the willowvale water supply initiative which will benefit 13 villages. it will cost r2 836 022.

the third initiative is phase two of the middledrift west water supply project. it is funded by both dwaf and cmip at a cost of r5 643 000.
it is expected to be constructed over seven months to supply water to 29 villages around middledrift.

the fourth project, funded by adm to the tune of r1300000, is the rooikrantz regional water scheme set to benefit five villages - jafta, tyusha, rhamnyiba, amantinde farm and mdingi - near king william`s town. phase one will supply water services to rhamnyiba and mdingi.
