The City of Cape Town has begun handing over completed homes to beneficiaries at its Edward Avenue Breaking New Ground housing project in Ottery, Grassy Park, marking a significant milestone for 124 qualifying families.
The development, which initially faced construction delays, is now progressing steadily with completion expected by June this year, according to City officials.
Project back on track
“I am elated to see the excellent progress being made on site. This project initially experienced delays but is now fortunately on track,” said Mayco member for human settlements, Carl Pophaim.
“Over the next few months, we will hand over all the homes in this project to the qualifying beneficiaries. Construction is expected to be completed by June, if all goes according to plan.”
The handover represents a meaningful achievement for families.
Commitment to housing delivery
Pophaim emphasised the City’s ongoing commitment to housing delivery across Cape Town’s metropolitan area.
“The City remains committed to completing this project and to advancing housing delivery in areas across the metro,” he said.
He extended gratitude to various stakeholders who contributed to the project’s progress.
“We thank the Ottery community, Human Settlements officials and all project partners for their cooperation in making progress here,” said Pophaim.
Fair selection process
The City ensured transparency in beneficiary selection, following established protocols to prevent irregularities.
Beneficiaries were selected according to the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register, ensuring fair and transparent distribution of housing opportunities.
This selection process prevents queue jumping and ensures homes are allocated to those who qualify under South African housing legislation.
The Edward Avenue project represents part of the City’s broader Breaking New Ground housing initiative, aimed at addressing housing backlogs while creating sustainable communities with proper infrastructure and amenities.
