The World Bank (MNSSD) is conducting a study on climate change and migration in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The objective of the study is to convey to the region's policymakers how climate change in likely to affect internal population movements. The service-provider will conduct questionnaire-based and rapid rural appraisal surveys in a sample of Middle East and North Africa countries, perform basic analysis and transmit the data and analysis to the World Bank for further analysis and writing-up. It is expected that the service provider will perform this task in an association with national research, academic or consultancy organisations. The research will be carried out in 3 MENA countries. The World Bank is initially proposing Morocco, Syria and Yemen, but is open to alternative proposals from service providers. Within each country the field research will be carried out in +/- 3 of sites. The study will focus on the transmission mechanism from climate change to migration via agricultural incomes and the rural economy. The process will be as follows, after the signature of contract, subject to the Terms of Reference: Discussions between World Bank team members and service-provider on the study methodology and questionnaire(s); Service-provider drafts inception report, proposing study methodology and questionnaire(s); World Bank reviews inception report and provides comments; Service provider implements field studies and tranmits cleaned datasets to World Bank; Service provider conducts basic analysis of data and writes up rapid rural appraisal results; Service provider submits draft final report to World Bank; Bank reviews draft final report; Service provider submits final report. It is expected that the field work should be carried out during October-November 2009. Interested consultants are hereby invited to submit expressions of interest.
