The Eastern Cape is predominantly a rural province with an urban eastern seaboard. On the other hand the consideration and equity suggest that all citizens are entitled to adequate housing. BNG Policy Framework states unequivocally that future housing delivery should be oriented towards creating sustainable human settlements. The settlements that attract housing investment from the state should have schools, clinics, running water and adequate sanitation amongst others. Provision of sanitation needs to be seen in the context of an integrated development strategy, the impact of inadequate sanitation services on housing developments affects the social and environmental needs of communities. In providing adequate and environmentally friendly sanitation, the Department of Housing invites experienced service providers in the field of housing development to submit proposals on sanitation innovations. Objectives: chosen innovations on sanitations will be piloted on low cost and BNG projects where the Department of Housing is the developer the piloted solutions will be independently evaluated and assessed with the intention of rolling out to other projects. The service provider must have a proven track record in municipal services and housing development to pilot sanitation innovations.
