Proposals are awaited for the proposed development of the existing Empangeni airfield as a regional recreational airfield on the existing property situate on Sub 2 of the farm Wilton Park 11484, Empangeni, uMhlathuze Municipality (KZ 282) in extent 8,9539Ha. Current activities include: pilot training; hangarage and airfield for agricultural crop sprayers (seasonal); air shows/ displays; etc. Development proposals include: consultation with community; need to upgrade the existing facilities and extend the runway; need to negotiate the acquisition by Council of the additional portion of farmland in extent 140x 60 metres (8400 m²) which is currently leased as an extension to the runway, orthe long term extension of the current lease agreement; need to accommodate commercial or service industrial uses such as aircraft repair and maintenance facilities; upgrading of facilities for public use etc; conclusion of a long term lease/concession agreement that will provide for professional management of the airfield (10 or 20 years lease period) at a negotiable rental which will be based on the scope of the improvements envisaged; accommodating the growing regional recreational and related aeronautical needs, as well as existing clubs; all proposals to include proposed business plans, schedules, financial/economic feasibilities, etc and proper licensing of the airfield, as well as security, aeronautical safety requirements and observations such as perimeter security fencing etc.
