Ethekwini Municipality: Water and Sanitation (EWS) invites appropriately experienced civil engineering companies or joint ventures to apply to pre-qualify for the tender for the construction of a nominally 4.5 m internal diameter (ID) services tunnel under Durban Harbour, KZN, South Africa. The project may be extended to include a second tunnel. The firsts tunnel to be bored will be about 530m long, for the conveyance of various services. The second (provis) bore will be a 'People Mover' tunnel of the same ID but about 750m-1000m long, depending on the final design. The tunnels are envisaged to be bored at a maximum depth of about 35m below sea level primarily through marine sediments (sand and silty clays) using a slurry type or 'EPB' pressurised face TBM, with a pre-cast concrete segmental lining. Both tunnels are required to be 'dry' in service. The Project will also include the construction of terminal structures(temporary and permanent access shafts) and associated surface & sub-surface works, but no mechanical plant relating to the 'people mover'. The selection of a contractor to execute the works will be conducted in two staged: prequalification, followed by formal tender. At the conclusion of the current (1st) phase, the intention is to pre-qualify suitable contractors who will, subsequently, be invited to submit tenders in the normal manner.
