The proposed mining area applied for in the Mining Right Application for the proposed Zandbaken Coal Mine covers an extent of 2 869 hectares (ha) within the Lekwa Local Municipality. The project is 20 km south-west of the town of Secunda and 30 km north-west of Standerton,located in the Mpumalanga province. The directly affected farms in the proposed project area are: portions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and RE of the farm Zandbaken 585 IR; portions RE, 1, 2, 3, 4 and RE of the farm Sandbaken 363 IS and portions 6, 7, and RE of the farm Bosmans Spruit 364 IS.
