About this development
SEACOM, which is privately funded and over three quarter African owned, will assist communication carriers in South and East Africa through the sale of wholesale international capacity to global networks via India and Europe. The system will provide African retail carriers with equal and open access to inexpensive bandwidth, removing the international infrastructure bottleneck and supporting East and South African economic growth. Installation of a fibre-optic submarine telecommunications cable, referred to as the SEA cable system, to link South Africa and East Africa with key international telecommunication hubs in Egypt and Europe. The cable will not contain any insulating oil or other hazardous substances and will have a maximum diameter of approximately 35mm. In South Africa, SEACOM has identified the town of Mtunzini, along the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, as the preferred location to land the cable. The expected cost is over $650 million.
